Great expectations for the ninth edition of The North Face® Lavaredo Ultra Trail which starts today at 23 from the center of Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL) 26 giugno 2015 - The North Face® Lavaredo Ultra Trail was presented today at 12 am at the Ice Palace in Cortina by Simone Brogioni, event organizer and race director, and the Mayor of Cortina Andrea Franceschi, to the national and international press. The race will start Friday night taking more than 1,200 competitors from 56 nations, mostly Europeans but also many Americans, Asians, Australians and from New Zealand, on the breathtaking route of 119 km with 5850 meters of elevation gain.
The average age of the runners is 42 years, and 80% of the participants are male.
Since the start of the first race, the Cortina Skyrace, the 20km at its first edition yesterday, the city of Cortina was filled with an air of celebration, enthusiasm and sport. Many trail runners went to the EXPO at the Ice Palace for the event.
A great opportunity for all runners to take part in a race in a unique setting of extraordinary beauty, and also a great opportunity for the area and tourism of Cortina to be appreciated by athletes from all over the world for this sport in large growth.
This year, the event is part of the Ultra Trail World Tour, the prestigious circuit that brings together the 10 most famous races in the world.
At the start at 11 pm, Corso Italia will glow with hundreds of headlamps that will guide the athletes in their first few kilometers. Expected arrivals from all over the world for this amazing ride that will span 119km in the most spectacular places in the Dolomites, Cristallo, Tofane, Cinque Torri, and of course the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. A long journey that will involve great champions, able to cross the finish line in 12 hours and amateur runners who will have 30 hours to get to Cortina within the time limit set.
The weather conditions seem optimal and this year there won’t be snow on the course of the race.
Many thanks go to the local administration which welcomed the event with enthusiasm and participation as well as the many volunteers Cortina.
Among the top runners, athletes of The North Face® Timothy Olson (US) for the first time in Cortina, and the Brazilian (but resident in Spain) Fernanda Maciel, winner in 2011 and second in 2012. Big fight between women: in addition to Maciel will start the three national French Caroline Chaverot, Emelie Lecomte and Nathalie Mauclair, Swiss athletes Denis Zimmermann and Andrea Huser and three of the Italian strongest: Lisa Borzani (national) from Padova, the Aosta Valley Francesca Canepa, victorious here in 2012 and second in 2014, and Katia Fori, the third LUT 2012 and 2014.
Among men, to battle with the US there will be French Erick Clavery, Sebastien Camus and Aurelien Collet, New Zealander Scott Hawker back from 2nd place to The North Face 100 Australia, the Spaniard Yeray Duran, French Freddy Thevenin from Reunion fourth the Lavaredo Ultra Trail 2014, and all the best Italian ultra trailer. Among them, the athletes of the team Salomon Isostad Giuliano Cavallo, the Nationals Ivan Geronazzo (fifth to the LUT 2014), Stefano Ruzza and Marco Zanchi, the local athlete Ivano Molin, and yet Daniel Fornoni, Christian Modena and Fulvio Dapit, who last year gave a hard time to the winner Anton Krupicka until mid-race, when he was then forced to retire.
Yulia Baykova’s return to competition is greatly participated by the whole Italian trail running community, who will wear a bib for the first time after the serious health problems of this winter.
TRAIL RUNNING RESORT
Thanks to the Lavaredo Ultra Trail, Cortina Turismo created the initiative "Cortina Trail Running Resort", the big news of the summer 2015 in the Dolomites, which provides a number of routes, offers and services dedicated to the runners. It offers detailed maps, profiles and GPS tracks available for downloading online, training camp to prepare for sports events, information materials and services designed specifically for an all-round running holiday.
The North Face®, the historic title sponsor of the race, confirmed its partnership with the event in Cortina, as well as Jeep, while other major brands were added this year: Isostad, with its isotonic drinks characterized by the label 'Clean Engagement' to defend the true values of sport and in particular the fight against doping, has signed a multi-year agreement that will see it as a main sponsor of the Lavaredo Ultra Trail; and also the important brands Garmin, the global leader in satellite navigation and GPS technology for the automotive, marine, aviation, sports and outdoor, and Buff, who in 1992 invented and patented the end multifunction seamless that protects against wind , cold, sun and dust, will sponsor the event.
The departure of Cortina Trail is scheduled for 8am Saturday morning June 27 always from Corso Italia. It is a 47km race, with 1,000 participants who have 12 hours of time to cover the circular circuit, which will follow the first 10 and the last 37km of the long course.
